Fortune teller for parties

Although it was never my intention to offer myself for hire as a fortune teller for parties and celebrations, I accidentally - thanks to Chantal Janzen - rolled into it. In this blog, I will tell you how this went.

After I had in 2018 collaborated on the &C Trend Book by writing the annual horoscope for this purpose and providing Chantal Janzen with a divination session, a few weeks later I was invited - along with everyone who had worked on this issue before and behind the scenes - to a delicious lunch.

As it was a publication looking ahead to the year ahead, the organisers thought it would be a nice idea if I brought my tarot cards to make some off-hand predictions for the attendees.

If I liked this myself, a table would be set up in the corner of the dining room where I could do my tarot readings in peace after lunch.

Ehm....

To be honest, I found that a bit exciting.

Entertaining others with my cards if they ask for them themselves; no problem at all. But doing readings for people who I had absolutely no idea whether or not they would be open to the tarot was a bit of a challenge for me.

I already had experience with festivals, events and other large-scale parties such as the Elf Fantasy Fair, the Paranormal Alternative event and the Paravisie fair (at the time, in cooperation with RTL and Het Zesde Zintuig), but when you are there, you know that the people who come to see you like what you do.

So today I did not know this.

Nevertheless, I agreed. I had had an insanely good time with Chantal during the photo shoot and the shooting of the fortune-telling video and did not want to disappoint them.

So said, so done.

Elf Fantasy Fair Blunder

I was nicely on time that day and the first visitor. On my own, I took a seat at a small table near the bar so that I could observe the people coming in at my leisure and quietly see which group appealed to me most to join later for dinner.

To the lady who came to ask me if I wanted a drink, I ordered a spa red.

The other guests trickled in and in no time were all over the place chatting pleasantly with each other. I don't think they knew I was also one of the invitees. No one said anything to me and since I am rather introverted by nature, I didn't feel myself getting directly involved in a conversation either.

As it took quite a long time before we were admitted to the dining room and after half an hour I started to feel a bit uncomfortable so alone at that table, I decided to get up anyway to cautiously join about five ladies, a few of whom struck me as very sympathetic.

My timing was great.

The exact moment I stood up, Chantal entered with her partner and I knocked my empty glass off the table with my bag, which shattered on the floor with a loud clatter.

Whereas all this time I had just tried to position myself as concealed as possible in the crowd, now everyone promptly looked my way and Chantal called out laughing through the foyer:

'Nathalie! That had you Surely you should have seen it coming!

One of the women in the group I had now joined turned to me immediately.

'I'm already glad it's not me today,' she laughed as she introduced herself to me.

The other ladies also smiled kindly at me and took turns shaking hands. Many of those present I already knew from TV or had seen on the internet or in a magazine, and the fact that they were so cordial and understanding towards me after my blunder reassured me immediately.

When a super sweet colleague from &C also came to see me, with whom I had worked before, my day could not get any better. She didn't know anyone else there either, so we were able to support each other.

However, the plan to sit at tables together as well did not pan out. All the plates had a name card indicating where the guests should take their seats. Unfortunately, I turned out not to be assigned to the nice ladies in the group nor to my familiar colleague.

Soothsayer with tarot cards

Despite this, I was fortunately quick to catch on. When the ladies and gentlemen I was sitting with at the table asked me what contribution I had made to the book and I explained that I was the 'fortune-teller' who had provided the horoscopes and had done a palm reading and tarot reading for Chantal, I immediately had their undivided attention.

'Could you do that for me too?" it immediately sounded from several quarters. 'I would love that too sometime!'

Even before the first course was served, I had already laid the card for two people and not only had some tears fallen from emotion but there was also exuberant laughter because of the recognition my readings brought to some ladies.

Where just an hour ago I would have preferred to hide myself to be as unobtrusive as possible, glasses and plates were now being pushed aside by my tablemates to make room for my tarot cards.

The people around me got noisier and noisier, and finally, when even the guests further away looked curiously in our direction to see what was going on at our table, suddenly someone from the organisation stood next to my chair.

'Nathalie, we are unfortunately running a bit behind schedule, I don't know if there will be time to do the card readings at the fortune-telling table down there later. Could you perhaps go round the tables later and ask people yourself if they would like a reading?'

'Absolutely not!' I exclaimed startled.

Of the people who had just asked me for it themselves, I knew they liked it but I didn't feel like forcing something on unknown people that I had no idea whether they liked at all.

Fortune teller for parties

Although she was sorry, she respected my decision. Especially when I had explained to her that there are always people who want nothing to do with this kind of thing and I would hate for them to feel overwhelmed or put off by me.

Between courses, however, the tarot card reading for my tablemates continued merrily and unnoticed Chantal had come to stand behind me.

'How cosy is it here...? I also want to hear later!'

All in all, it still turned out to be a great day and there even appeared to be time left to give a tarot reading to a few people in the corner of the room at the special table.

When I was one of the first to leave because I still had an appointment elsewhere, Chantal and her partner Marco gave me a huge bunch of flowers containing seven peacock feathers as a thank you for providing the entertainment, truly beautiful!

Since then, I have already had multiple bookings from individuals and companies who had heard through the grapevine that they could hire me as a fortune teller for parties and celebrations. Although I never really advertised myself as such, word of mouth has been swift.

By now we are many parties and events on and I have actually enjoyed it. Besides the more serious work in my practice and the tarot courses I teach, a party in its own right is a welcome change.

UPDATE: Unfortunately, it is now no longer possible to book me as a fortune teller at your party. However, you can request a personal tarot consultation with me via www.viptarot.nl
